Puppy & Housebreaking?
I have been housebreaking my puppy for 2 months now. And she just has accidents in the house.
she is 6-months old. Is this normal??
Our puppy is 6 months old and was having lots of accidents. We did some reading and we now keep her in a small room, its like her den, and we only let her out in the main part of the house for a short amount of time to play or go for a walk etc. We regularly take her outside and reward her for going to the bathroom outside. Sometimes we feel badly keeping her in her little room when she wants to be with us in the house, but we don’t want her to keep having accidents in the house. Eventually she will learn and maybe when she is 1 year old we will give her more freedom in the house. For now, its working very well and she has very few accidents. She likes her little room, it has her toys, food, water and a bed and her cage she sleeps in at night. She does not have accidents in her little room because if a dog thinks the small area is their territory/den then they keep it clean.

While you love your new puppy, you probably don’t enjoy having him urinate on your bedroom rug, your sofa or on any of your other belongings. If your puppy seems to think that he can do his business everywhere, you have to buckle up and get ready to start housebreaking your puppy. After all, even humans had to be taught to use the toilet, so dogs aren’t different and since they don’t live with their mom anymore, the owner has to take care of that. Housebreaking your puppy is all about training him to urinate and/or defecate where you want him to.
First of all, you should be aware of these facts:
1. Puppies can’t fully control their bladder or bowel movements until they are approximately 12 weeks of age.
2. Most puppies need to release their bladder and/or bowels about 6 or 7 times per day.
3. Your puppy’s body language can indicate if it’s time to go. Watch out for him slowly following his tail or turning around without a purpose.
4. Your puppy’s meals put pressure on his bladder and colon, so always take him out after a meal.
You’ll have to communicate with your dog when you housebreak him. You have to use a loud “NO!” and tell your dog that it’s not OK for him to urinate on your rug. You shouldn’t have to use physical violence. You should always try to say it while he is relieving himself, otherwise he probably won’t understand why you’re mad at him if he relieved himself a little while ago.
Look out for physical communication and take him out as soon as he needs to go. When he urinates or defecates in his designated area, you must praise him and pat him so that he understands that you are pleased that he relieved himself in the right place. Give him a treat, use a kind voice and nod to tell him you’re proud of him and he’ll soon get it. Dogs crave praise. If they do something that gets their owner to praise, cuddle or pat them, they will try to repeat that action. This is why it’s so important to use positive reinforcement when your dog relieves himself appropriately. If you want your dog to defecate each morning, praise him and pat him when he does, and he’ll soon get it.
Get to know your puppy’s habits and build your routine around his. When does he feel the need to relieve himself? After dinner? Before bedtime? First thing in the morning? Take him out when he needs to go out. Proper housebreaking will help keep your puppy healthy and your house clean!
