How do you keep a puppy from ripping up her training pad?

We have no choice but to leave her in an unfinished room in the basement while we are gone about 9 hours out of the (week)day. She uses the training pads, but then rips them to shreds afterwards. I know she just wants it out of there and is also starving for attention, but for those 9 hours, it’s beyond my control. What should I do?
But I’m positive she wouldn’t be able to hold it in her crate that long, and soiling her crate would not aid in crate training.
BY THE WAY, please don’t question my abilities or intentions as a dog mom by assuming things you don’t know. She has another dog in there with her who she gets along with very well. She has plenty of toys to play with, tons of room to play in, and fresh water.

I would recommend that you learn proper crate training – dogs love to be in a crate, it is like a den for them. I strongly strongly recommend this and it would solve a number of problems for you. First, she would not need to be in an unfinished room in the basement…you could put the crate in the kitchen. Second, there would be no training pad for her to rip up. And third you would have a much better adjusted dog. Furthermore, as you go farther in puppy hood there are times that the dog needs to be quiet in her crate and you need a break. Crate training is also an excellent way to housebreak a dog. Each time she comes out of the crate you take her straight outside for a washroom break and then play for a while and then back to sleep. I know that many people think that this is cruel but I assure you from 30 years of raising dogs and being heavily involved in dog obedience that this is not a bad thing…it is a good thing for all involved. Also if you do decide to do this I would recommend researching this on the net and then you need to buy a crate that will fit your full grown dog. But since she is still little you need to reduce the size of the crate for a while or she will just pee in there. So I take a cardboard or plywood and reduce the crate to just slightly larger than she is. Please, there also must be someone in the area that will walk the dog part way through the day….you must have some children nearby that would do this for a dollar a day or less? Good luck with your puppy! And you would be surprised how long she can hold her pee in the crate – she will not want to pee there – do not use this as an excuse not to crate train – give her a chance for the best you can give.
