The All Around American Dog Breed, The Blackmouth Cur

The Blackmouth Cur is a supposed native of the US and has different lines within the breed, each originating from different states of the country. Each of these lines has great abilities that are put to use by people such as hunters, farmers, families and more. The Blackmouth Cur is an all around dog that’s useful in tasks such as treeing, hunting, herding, guarding, and more.

The different lines of the Blackmouth Cur include the Ladner Yellow Blackmouth Cur that originated from Mississippi. This breed was the first blackmouth cur to be registered in a kennel club, the National Kennel Club on April of 1964. This line is particularly good in: treeing squirrel, raccoon and bobcat; hunting hogs and cattle, and search and rescue services.

The Red Blackmouth Cur came from Alabama originally. It has served as an excellent home protector, herder, and hunter. During the 1940s, these dogs were owned by the courthouses of Howardtown, Alabama.

There are also the Wetherford Ben Blackmouth Cur and Florida Blackmouth Cur. They came from Texas and Florida respectively and are great herders. The Blackmouth Cur is a breed that can perform a lot of tasks that’s why it has been popular all over the US and now, its popularity reaches as far as India, Russia, Haiti and throughout Europe.

For decades, the Blackmouth Cur has been called by different names like: farmer’s dog, Shepherd’s Hound, cow dog, and Herdsman’s Dog. The Cur name of this breed has also been spelled in different ways like Cu, Curre and Kurre. The American Kennel Club does not recognize any lines from this breed as an official member but the United Kennel Club recognizes the Red Blackmouth Cur as the standard picture of the Blackmouth Cur.

The Blackmouth Cur is very good at treeing and hunting, and possesses an outstanding skill in jumping and climbing. For this reason, it is important to confine this active dog in a fenced area that are as high as six meters or more. The Blackmouth Cur is also noted for its courage and strength as it never backs down in encounters with other large animals even bulls and bears.

This dog is very loyal and loving when it comes to the family that owns it. It makes an excellent watchdog and guard dog because it is protective of the master, his family and his property. This breed also loves to please the master and so teaching it some commands will be easy as it is a fast learner and is an intelligent dog.

The appearance of the Blackmouth Cur is composed of a short and rough or smooth coat. The colors appear in red, fawn, brindle, yellow, black and white. The Blackmouth Cur also has large and webbed feet just like the Catahoula Leopard which is another American breed of dog.
