Three Heroic Dogs

Roselle:
Roselle is a yellow Labrador. She is also a heroine of, well, heroic proportions. On September 11, 2001, Roselle was napping peacefully under her master’s (Michael Hingson) desk on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center. The day had started out just like any ordinary Tuesday, but things were about to change drastically, and change the world forever. Michael said, “The building started swaying, and the air was filled with smoke, fire, paper and the smell of kerosene!” That was when the first of the planes flown by suicidal manic terrorists slammed into the floor 15 stories above Michael’s office. Roselle went into action. She led Michael safely out of the building and away from the danger. You see, Michael is blind.

Gander:
Gander was a huge Newfoundland. He was the mascot of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Rifles of Canada in 1940. Gander displayed his bravery many times and under many different circumstances. Once, as Japanese troops were nearing a group of wounded Canadian soldiers, Gander surprised the enemy by charging them. For some reason, the Japanese were unwilling to shoot the dog. Instead, they changed their route and the lives of the wounded soldiers were saved. His last act of heroism happen when an enemy grenade landed near a group of Canadian soldiers. Gander grabbed the grenade in his mouth and carried it to where it would do no harm. The grenade exploded in Gander’s mouth, killing him instantly. He had given his life saving the lives of the Canadian soldiers.

Selvakumar:
Sangeeta’s family lived along the coast, just north of Pondicherry. The morning of December 26 began like most, with sunny skies and a cool breeze. But that beautiful day wouldn’t last all day. That was the day that a tsunami swept on shore and nearly swept away the life of Sangeeta’s oldest son, Dinakaran. Sangeeta grabbed her two smaller children and told Dinakaran, who was seven years old, to run. Dinakaran ran but he ran toward the hut that was his home. Selvakumar went into the hut after Dinakaran, grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, and dragged him to safety.

Three stories of dog heroism…three brave dogs…but then, I believe that all dogs have heroism in them somewhere!
